Lead, Kevin explained the different operations he performed during an apiary inspection, including how to separate frames using his preferred J hive tool, how he slides the frames back into place to reduce stress on the bees, and how he covers different aspects of his inspections.
Attendees found this very insightful, as it gave them a better understanding of what to expect when they inspect their hives and to take away new methods to try out.
Kevin also provided some tips on how to prepare for an apiary inspection. He recommended that beekeepers ensure their hives are clean and organised and have all the necessary equipment on hand, such as a hive tool, smoker and other equipment. He also suggested that beekeepers take some time to observe their hives before the inspection to be familiar with the layout of the frames and the bees’ behaviour at the entrance (bees bringing pollen in would indicate the queen is laying) and in the hive.
This was a great training inspection at the Apiary for the members that were able to assist today to learn from seasoned lead beekeepers and to get answers to questions they may have.
