On Sunday 28th April we had a good turn out to the community tree planting at the King George V playing field, held as part of celebrations recognising 150 years of the British Beekeepers Association. The BBKA was founded in 1874 as a London based beekeepers club, within ten years it was a Nationwide organisation and today the BBKA has around 30,000 members. We planted an alder (alnus glutinosa), which appreciates a wet environment, so it is well suited to the location as we paddled up to it after the very heavy overnight rain. Alders provide food and shelter for lots of wildlife, and I hope that the bees in the area will find it when the catkins emerge.
Deputy Mayor Rob Comber joined David Geen, Mary Gillan, Evan Reynolds, Peter and Lori Munday, Ethan Staton, John Waddelove and Gill Turner. We had a few lurkers in the background, Felicity Waddelove, Peter Butcher and Ethans parents, Ian and Laura. Thanks go to Mary who made everything happen. Hopefully something will pop up in the Wokingham Today publication.
