A Busy Father’s Day at the Apiary! 🐝

Despite low numbers today (it was Father’s Day, after all!), we were fortunate to have Master Beekeeper Garth visit and share his knowledge with our newer members. Those who attended found his insights incredibly valuable – thank you, Garth!

Although fewer in number, the team got stuck into a very eventful day:

  • In Hive 6, we removed the previously caged queen due to the colony’s assertive behaviour. A new queen, originally from a swarm-prone colony, was introduced in a cage with fondant.

  • One colony was found to have laying workers, so we shook them out and added a queen. The Apiary Manager will return during the week to introduce her properly.

  • A new member successfully moved their nuc into a full-size hive as it was on the verge of swarming due to lack of space.

  • One of the initiative nucs appears to have lost or superseded its queen – it’s drawing out new queen cells and also needs to be moved into a full-size hive urgently.

  • Another nuc was found to have a new, marked, and laying queen, and this too needs be transferred to a full-size colony before they also want to swarm.

Thanks again to everyone who came along and helped. It may have been a quieter turnout, but the work achieved was anything but! 💪🐝
