Gillian led a bustling hive inspection on Sunday!
The day involved several tasks:
- Colony splits: We divided some strong colonies to create new ones, providing opportunities for our newer beekeepers to nurture them.
- Nuc allocation: Two nucs (small starter hives) were given to members, with more to be assigned soon.
- Queenless nuc management: These nucs will be checked this week, with all but one queen cell removed to encourage the development of a strong queen.
- Bailey comb change: A bailey board (a tool used to restrict the queen’s movement) was installed on a hive. Gillian then located and carefully moved the queen to the part of the hive where we’ll be performing a Bailey comb change (a method for managing honey production).
- Demaree education: Gillian patiently explained the Demaree system (another honey management technique) to our newer club members.
Overall, it was a great day with a fantastic turnout from our newer beekeepers.
